How to work on social cognition skills while watching TV with your child
Sometimes understanding social cues and practicing social skills takes a lot of work. You would probably never think that you can work on social skills while watching TV with your kids. Watch our instructional video of Olivia, 11 years old as she works on practicing concepts such as emotions, problem solving, idioms, sarcasm and more.

By watching and discussing this video with your kids, you are working on skills such as:
- perspective taking
- idioms
- hidden (unspoken) rules
- making inferences
- body language & facial expressions
- reading context cues
- problem solving
Emotional Vocabulary
Many children (and adults) struggle with emotional vocabulary. Just ask your child how many emotions can they name and then ask if they know any synonyms for those emotions. Chances are, they will not be able to name many.
Make it into a game:
1. Pick an emotion
2. Have everyone take a turn coming up with a different synonym for that emotion
+ 1 point for synonym no one has mentioned before
+ 2 points for an idiom describing said emotion
