1. Do social cognition groups use the Social Thinking® curriculum?
Yes. All of our social cognition groups use the Social Thinking® curriculum. Social Thinking® has been originally developed for the special needs population, but as later noticed, it has been very beneficial for typical children and adults who struggle with social challenges and/or self-regulation. There is a lot of research on this methodology and I encourage you to visit www.socialthinking.com to find out more. The website contains many great resources. The methodology addresses a lot of important concepts, such as being part of a group, whole body listening, flexible thinking, hidden rules, expected vs. unexpected behaviors, thinking with your eyes, thinking thoughts and feeling feelings, thinking about others vs. just myself, understanding different perspectives, size of my problem vs. size of my reaction, identifying triggers and finding tools for calming, emotional regulation,..etc.

14. Do you recommend having siblings in the same class?
With any siblings we want to make sure that the each sibling has an opportunity to be an individual. Each child has their own characteristics, even twins. We feel that a unilateral decision needs to be made. Everyone, the teacher, the siblings and the caregivers needs to weigh in on the decision whether same or separate group/class would be most appropriate.
15. My child has a significant language delay. Can he/she register for a social cognition group?
Please note: Social Cognition is a language-based approach. It is best suited for children and adults who have acquired solid language skills and who are using language to learn, as opposed to still learning language. Please contact us to discuss this further. We can help you make a decision that is based on the individual and the class that you are interested in.
16. My child needs 1:1 assistance. Can our provider attend along side our child?
Please contact us to discuss before registering. Depending on the reason, we might be able to accommodate.
If permitted, a direct care provider will NOT be charged an additional fee to attend along side a student.
If permitted, a direct care provider will NOT be charged an additional fee to attend along side a student.
17. My child has other needs that will require accommodations, would they still be able to attend?
We are able to provide reasonable accommodations. Please contact us to discuss the specific needs your child might have.
18. My child will be out for more than two classes. Do you think he/she will benefit?
Students should try their best to attend all 8 classes in the session. We noticed that the students who benefit the most from the classes are the students who attend 7-8 classes.
If you know the student will miss more than 2 classes, we recommend that you skip this session and ask us to contact you when the next session is scheduled.
If you know the student will miss more than 2 classes, we recommend that you skip this session and ask us to contact you when the next session is scheduled.
19. How many students are in a class?
We try to have a minimum of four (4) students and a maximum of six (6) students in each class. This allows for a productive group discussion and for each student to receive individual attention.
20. Can you guarantee how many student will be in a class?
No, we have found that as classes form we start our with certain individuals interested. Then the interest changes or remains for the class. It might be the scheduling conflict or they decide another class is a better fit. We typically reschedule the class for next session if there is less than 3 students interested/enrolled. We do not invoice until we have confirmed that 3 students will be in the class.
21. Do the classes ever get rescheduled within the same 8 or 5 week session?
Possibly. As it gets closer for the group/class start date and a specific class needs to be rescheduled to next session due to not enough interest. In this case we might call you to see if you would still be able to attend if the class was moved to a different day/time. If there is anyone in the class that is not able to attend the possible replacement date/time. The class will stay as originally scheduled.
If you registered for a class that needs to be rescheduled to another session, you will get a call with other currently scheduled classes your child would benefit from. You can also choose to be put on a list to be contacted when the class is scheduled again.

22. The class I wanted to register for is full. What are my options?
We will put your child down on the waiting list and if there are more than 4 students interested in that class (on top of the original 6 students already registered), we will most likely open another class on a different day/time. If another class will not open, we will discussed which other classes might be a good fit for your student. You can also be put on a list to call when next session opens up.
23. Can we tour an in-person class prior to registering?
Absolutely. Please give us a call to arrange, as we do not have set office hours. It is common for students to stop by before session starts to look around and familiarize themselves with the environment so they know what to expect.
24. After I drop off my child, do I have to stay in the waiting room?
If your child is under the age of 18 and new to our agency, a parent/caregiver will be required to wait in the waiting room for the first 2 classes. If you wish to leave the office/premises/drop off and go, please make arrangements with our staff. This is a case by case bases and not our standard practice.
Parent(s) or other responsible parties are to remain in the waiting room during classes. However, we understand that you may step out for a quick phone call or to the restroom.
Some of our teens/adult students have made prior arrangements/agreements with us. Please talk to us if you are uncertain.

25. Can I bring my other children/siblings to wait with me?
Yes, we do have Legos, books, and games in the waiting room to keep siblings entertained if necessary. However the classroom is very close to the waiting room, so we need to make sure not to be too noisy and distracting.
26. Can I stay inside the classroom with my child?
No. We have noticed that students don't learn to their full potential when the parent stays in the class. The classroom door is never fully closed so you are able to hear what is going on in the class. If you wish, you can move a chair in the hallway just outside the classroom so you are "right there" without the students knowing. If you worry about your child having separation anxiety or any other questions/anxieties about coming to the group, we suggest stopping by before the session starts to familiarize them with our environment.
27. Why do I have return the registration/intake form prior to the start of class?
Our social groups do have a set curriculum, however, the teacher adjusts it based on the individuals enrolled in each group. Forms can be found at: https://www.unicornhaven.org/intake-forms.html
28. Will I get feedback on the classes?
Yes. The teacher will come out and speak with all the parents that are in the waiting room before the class ends. We ask that all parents are in the waiting room 15 minutes before class ends to make sure they do not miss it.
***Exception would be the extra-curricular classes. ***
***Exception would be the extra-curricular classes. ***
29. How to I extend the learning to home and other environments?
We offer a parent/caregiver class once per each session. This class lasts 60 - 90 minutes and introduces participants to the social cognition concepts and topics addressed in our groups. Most importantly, this class will teach you how to incorporate the framework into your everyday routines and live "social thinking life." Our teachers communicate with you after the end of each group about the topics addressed and how to further extend learning at home. We encourage parents/caregivers to let us know if a social situation comes up in other environments and your child struggles. It helps us to indirectly address those situations during group and further analyze it. We also encourage you telling your child's therapists and teachers what your child is working on and sharing our handouts. Some speech and occupational therapists are able to work on those concepts and extend the client's learning outside of our group environment.
30. How do I sign up?
31. I am having a hard time identifying the skills my child needs to work on. Is there a list that will help me?

32. Who will the classes benefit?
Children and adults who struggle with social challenges and/or self-regulation.
33. Are your social groups therapy?
No . Social Cognition and Social Acting Group(s) are educationally based and not therapy.
34. When is payment due?
Payment is due at the time of registration.
35. What if a class is missed?
Please contact us if you wish the have the handouts or discuss the class that was missed.
36. I will be missing more than two classes. Should I enroll my kiddo?
If you know prior to registering that you will miss more than 2 classes (per 8 week session), please do not register, and wait until another session is scheduled.
We have noticed that the children that benefited the most from our classes are the ones that attended 7-8 classes. In addition, the others in the class are counting on the group for discussions.

37. What if the class I enrolled by kiddo in is not a good fit?
The teacher will notify the family immediately after the 1st week of class if they feel the student is not a “good fit” for the class he/she is currently enrolled in. If this happens, the teacher will suggest a class that would be a better fit to meet student’s needs. If the class is offered in the same session, and the student is able to attend during that day/time, they will be transferred. If there are no classes that would be a better fit for the student scheduled in the session, our office will work with you to make sure there is a class that is a good fit for your student in the next session.
38. What platform do you use for virtual class?
We use Zoom. Each week we send out an invite by email so our students require approval to get into the Zoom virtual class.
