Consultations
Unicorn Haven offers free consultations (up to 30 minutes) to discuss yours and/or your child’s needs. This consultation can take place over the phone or in person at our Tempe location. The strengths and weaknesses of the client will be discussed as well as desired outcomes and previous treatments. At the end of the consultation, recommendations will be made.
Social Cognition Groups - Virtual & In-Person
In- Person Groups
Most of our Social Cognition groups meet once a week for 60 minutes, with each session lasting 8 weeks. We only accept up to 6 students in each group. (Exception is our Social Acting class which can have 8 individuals in the class.) The reason for this is that 6 is big enough to promote interaction within the group, but also small enough to give each child individual attention. Even though every group uses a set curriculum, we modify the curriculum based on the needs of the students in the group. We are able to accommodate a variety of needs; however, you need to make sure you communicate those needs to us. Our teacher talks to the parents, as a group, at the end of every class to let them know what the group discussed and learned in the class and the vocabulary used. The teacher also suggests how to continue the learning at home and in the community.
Virtual Groups
Our virtual classes are held via ZOOM once a week for 8 weeks. Clients will receive access to our password protected section after enrollment to obtain the class materials. Materials are divided into sections (to be printed, to use as visuals, homework, lesson extension activities). All virtual classes open 10 minutes before scheduled for the students to talk and socialize. Each class consists of discussion and fun interactive games/activities to solidify concepts learned. Parents/Guardians have the opportunity to talk to the teacher and ask questions after the end of the class.
Technology Requirements:
Functioning camera and audio
Quiet place to participate in the class

“The results of the assessment provide not only a better understanding of the student’s pragmatic language skills and his social interactive functioning, but also his ability to effectively apply social knowledge to the academic curriculum. A well-done assessment can guide the team in designing specific and tangible social and academic goals. …A student may score extremely well on all subtests of IQ and language, yet perform quite poorly on dynamic measures of communication.” (Winner, 2007)
This assessment consists of:
Student’s history
Questionnaire for teachers and related service professionals
Writing sample
Evaluation
Double interview
